Hey Elegant Creators,
We’re all familiar with the iconic Mount Rushmore and its majestic carvings of U.S. presidents. But did you know there’s another monumental mountain carving underway in South Dakota? It’s called the Crazy Horse Memorial, and it’s still being sculpted today!
Crazy Horse was a revered warrior of the Lakota Sioux. He’s best known for his role in Custer’s Last Stand in 1876, where he led the Native American forces to a significant victory over the U.S. Army in a two-day battle.
The idea for the Crazy Horse Memorial was sparked by Chief Henry Standing Bear, a cousin of Crazy Horse. Inspired by the construction of Mount Rushmore, he wanted to honor his cousin with a similar monument. To bring this vision to life, he reached out to Korczak Ziolkowski, the same sculptor who had worked on Mount Rushmore.
The Legacy Continues
Korczak Ziolkowski was captivated by the project and dedicated himself to carving the mountain until his late 60s. Today, the work continues under the guidance of Monique Ziolkowski, Korczak’s daughter, who leads a team of sculptors and carvers carrying on her father’s legacy.
This colossal project is still very much a work in progress. Korczak’s three children and four grandchildren are also actively involved, ensuring that the Crazy Horse Memorial moves closer to completion each day.
If you’re ever in South Dakota, this awe-inspiring memorial is a must-see. It’s located just 17 miles southwest of Mount Rushmore, making it an easy addition to your trip. The admission fees collected from visitors go directly toward continuing the carving of this monumental tribute.
